Assessing thermal neutral zones in Sri Lanka for ten different dairy cattle breeds and crosses: An approach using temperature humidity index (THI)

چکیده

The magnitude of heat stress in dairy cattle is assessed using temperature humidity index (THI) widely the world. present study was conducted to assess appropriateness incorporating THI recommending breeds different areas Sri Lanka. considered 10 genotypes commonly reared for milk production country.  Daily values were computed by employing a thermal model, = Tdb - [0.55 (0.55 × RH/100)] (Tdb 58) data collected from 26 meteorological stations 2005-2014. regions and threshold used produce maps. Among crosses, Jersey crossbreds, except Friesian cross, showed high coping ability with comparatively capacity. Local not affected within range observed country. based recommendation distribution could be made identifying variation genotype minimizing vulnerability climate change. Therefore, costly management interventions needed mitigate related low productivity under smallholder systems abated. Key words: Climate change, breeds, stress.

A Re-evaluation of the Impact of Temperature Humidity Index (THI) and Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) on Milk Production in High Producing Dairy Cows

The temperature humidity index (THI) was originally developed for humans by Thom (1958) and extended to cattle by Berry et al (1964). It is currently used to estimate cooling requirements of dairy cattle in order to improve the efficiency of management strategies to alleviate heat stress. The Livestock Conservation Institute evaluated the biological responses to varying THI values and categoriz...

Assessing priorities for conservation in Tuscan cattle breeds using microsatellites.

Preservation of rare genetic stocks requires assessment of within-population genetic diversity and between-population differentiation to make inferences on their degree of uniqueness. A total of 194 Tuscan cattle (44 Calvana, 35 Chianina, 25 Garfagnina, 31 Maremmana, 31 Mucca Pisana and 28 Pontremolese) individuals were genotyped for 34 microsatellite markers. Moreover, 56 samples belonging to ...

Heat stress in dairy cattle and other livestock under southern African conditions. III. Monthly temperature-humidity index mean values and their significance in the performance of dairy cattle.

Temperature-humidity index (THI) values applicable to South Africa and Namibia have been established during this investigation for each month of the year by means of computerized modelling and mapping techniques. The data indicate that each year heat stress risk areas (HSRA's) expand from August to January and retract from February to July. The THI values classified according to the Livestock W...
